Zac Gilder Affil.Airah IAQ Special Technical Group
Zac is a seasoned expert in business case development and project management, with over 17 years of experience delivering energy efficiency solutions across a wide range of industries and large-scale properties. His work spans hospitals, shopping centres, and other complex facilities, with projects ranging from $40,000 to over $2 million in scope.
Since 2009, Zac has worked extensively with HVAC UVC technology as part of a broader career focused on energy efficiency, indoor air quality and building performance.
Zac originally came to UVC from an energy efficiency and IAQ consulting background, where he worked with clients to evaluate, validate and justify technologies capable of delivering measurable building outcomes. That experience shaped his practical approach to HVAC UVC—not simply as a product, but as a building performance solution that must be properly understood, justified, correctly applied and delivered.
Working closely with building owners, consultants, contractors and end users, Zac helps organisations understand how HVAC UVC works, where it provides the greatest value and how projects can be developed, approved and implemented safely, on time and with measurable operational outcomes. He also develops and presents business cases for HVAC UVC projects and regularly delivers technical presentations to industry groups, consultants, contractors and building owners on the practical application and benefits of HVAC UVC technology.
Zac specializes in HVAC&R energy efficiency, maintenance optimization, and indoor air quality improvement. He has personally worked with thousands of air handling units throughout his career, gaining deep, hands-on insight into the performance and challenges of cooling coils and broader HVAC systems.
His practical expertise is complemented by a strong track record of delivering measurable energy savings, improved indoor air quality and operational improvements across complex building portfolios.
Zac’s contributions to the industry have earned national recognition, including:
• AMP Capital – National Excellence in Operations – Service Provider (2013)
• Excellence in Sustainability Award – Pacific Fair
• Property Council of Australia, September 2012
Malcolm Cain
Malcolm brings more than three decades of international HVAC engineering and operational experience, including over 20 years dedicated to the application of HVAC UVC technology.
Following his engineering training in the United Kingdom, Malcolm began his career with Honeywell, working in the UK before transferring to New Zealand. His career has since included senior engineering, refrigeration and operational management roles across New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Guam, where he was responsible for HVAC systems supporting major commercial and United States military facilities.
It was during his time in Guam that Malcolm was first introduced to Steril-Aire. Faced with the severe microbial contamination challenges common in tropical HVAC systems, he conducted extensive field evaluations that demonstrated the technology’s ability to solve problems that conventional maintenance practices had struggled to control.
Recognising the potential for Australian and New Zealand buildings, Malcolm founded Steril-Aire Oceania in 2007. Over the following three years he personally led extensive field trials and case studies to validate HVAC UVC performance under local operating conditions before introducing the technology more broadly to the market. Since then, he has overseen more than 85 documented case studies throughout Australia and New Zealand, continually refining application methods and demonstrating the performance that can be achieved through correct system design and application.
Today Malcolm is responsible for the technical delivery of every Steril-Aire HVAC UVC project. He determines equipment selection, system configuration and application methodology, assesses site conditions, develops installation strategies, coordinates technical requirements with contractors, leads commissioning and trials, and resolves complex application challenges across a wide range of HVAC environments.
This hands-on responsibility is fundamental to Steril-Aire’s ability to consistently deliver reliable outcomes. Malcolm’s philosophy has always been that successful HVAC UVC projects are achieved through engineering, correct application and sufficient UVC output—not simply by installing ultraviolet lamps. His practical experience continues to underpin the technical standards and performance methodology that distinguish Steril-Aire throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The Steril-Aire Mission
To produce innovative, technological solutions, backed by science, that enhance our customer’s image, save money and create a better environment to live, work and breathe.
Why Steril-Aire?
Steril-Aire invented the original high-output UVC emitter for HVAC use — designed to substantially remove viruses, bacteria, mould, and VOCs from the airstream as well as remove mould , bacteria and yeast from coil and drain pan surfaces. Unlike low-output UV lamps that deliver little more than a blue glow, Steril-Aire is engineered to perform — every time.
Unmatched Performance :
- Power to get the job done- Up to 6 x the output of other UV lamps in cold moving air (output necessary to remove and prevent biofilm from forming and to penetrate the cooling coil)
- Optimised for performance in cold, moving airflows (other UVC lose significant output reducing performance in cold moving air)
- Uniquely located in the precise location in the air conditioning system where there is the most microbial growth to get maximum benefit and effect for surfaces and air
- 18,000-hour emitter life, with unlimited warranty on power supplies.
- Backed by comprehensive national support, including supply and install and warranty
We stand behind our product and the results promised
Don’t be caught with just a blue light — choose proven UVC performance.
